Rate of wall putty work per square meter in Nepal

Overview

Wall putty

Wall putty and its scope in brief:

Wall putty is basically white cement-based powder that is applied to walls and ceilings, both interior and exterior, for smooth finishing before carrying out coloring work. Fundamentally, two types of putty are easily available in the Nepali market, with different brand names and companies.

  1. Cement-based putty

This putty comes in powder form, which is mixed and stirred well with water to form a paste. This putty can be used on both interior and exterior walls, as well as ceilings. As it is a white cement-based putty, it provides better water resistance. Although the company claims to be waterproof, it's better to use water-proofing chemicals before its application in damp places.

  1. Acrylic putty

This putty comes in ready-to-use paste form. You can use it over walls, ceilings, and wooden surfaces. This putty should not be used on exterior surfaces because of its low water resistance. The major components of this putty are acrylic resins and other additives.

After application of the wall putty, it should be left to dry for a day before application of the next coat. Normally, two coats of wall putty with a thickness of around 1.5 mm are applied, which provides a smooth finish. After competition of wall putty work and drying for a day, sanding should be done using sandpaper. The sandpaper to be used is found in Nepali markets with sandpaper numbers of 100 and 120 (Khaski no. 100 or 120). After sanding, primer shall be used as it provides better bonding of wall putty with color. Primer decreases the amount of absorption of paint by putty, thereby minimizing the cost. After the application of primer, you can apply the color of your choice. We will have a separate blog on rate analysis over primer and color work. We have already placed a detailed analysis of plaster work in our earlier blog: https://www.ieccc.com.np/2024/06/rate-analysis-on-plaster-works-in-Nepal.html.

The norms we follow for rate analysis

  • District rate of Kathmandu: 080/81

Calculation

As we don’t have specific norms for worker requirements and putty coverage in the DUDBC code for wall putty work, we are taking the worker rate as in practice in the Nepali market. And coverage of putty according to the specifications of the manufacturer company. We are using cement-based wall putty for our rate analysis.

Current rate of workers per sq. ft. of putty work: Rs. 5 to Rs. 7 (we take Rs. 7).

Current rate of workers per square meter of putty work: Rs. 75.39

Coverage per kg of putty as specified by the manufacturer for a double coat: 10 to 15 sq ft (we take 10 sq ft).

Coverage per kg of putty as specified by the manufacturer for a double coat: 0.92 square meters

For one square meter of putty required, 1.09 kg

Sandpaper: L.S

Material rate as mentioned in the district rate of Kathmandu: 080/81

Wall putty: 1.09 kg at 38.00 = Rs. 41.42

Sandpaper: Rs. 6 L.S.

Material cost: Rs. 41.42 + 6 = Rs. 47.42

Workers rate per square meter in the local market: Rs 75.39

Cost of tools and plants used

Tools and plant: 3% of workers = 3% of 75.39 = Rs. 2.26

Total cost: materials + workers + tools and plants

                  = 47.42 + 75.39 + 2.26

Total cost: Rs. 125.07

Contractor overhead and profit at 15%

Contractor overhead: 15% of 125.07 = Rs. 18.76

Total cost per square meter of putty work: 125.07 + 18.76 = Rs. 143.83

Others

In normal practice, wall putty is applied directly to the plastered surface, but if you use primer before the application of wall putty, it reduces the quantity of putty, thereby minimizing the cost and also promoting the durability of paint and putty work.

If you use waterproof wall putty in place of normal plain wall putty, the price will rise from 60% to 65%.
