Rate of terrazzo mosaic flooring per square meter in Nepal

Overview

Terrazzo flooring

In modern days, you have various options for flooring work. In our last blog, we discussed tile flooring. You can visit it for detailed information regarding cost analysis: https://www.ieccc.com.np/2024/06/rate-of-tile-work-per-square-meter-in.html

In this blog, we are about to discuss terrazzo flooring. Terrazzo mosaic flooring is a mix of scattered marble chips, marble dust, and white or gray cement with additional coloring pigments between the borders formed by strips of glass, pvc, or marble. This border helps to maintain slope during flooring work. You can also include other natural stones and quartz as per the needs of the design. Although terrazzo flooring has been in practice in the western world since ancient times, it's still not that common a flooring practice in Nepal. Basically, few commercial buildings, like hospitals and schools, are carrying out terrazzo flooring. Due to its durability, appealing looks, and easy maintenance, it can be an ideal choice for commercial and residential buildings too. As per the norms of DUDBC, you can carry out terrazzo mosaic flooring work over

In this blog, we are doing a detailed rate analysis on 25-mm-thick terrazzo mosaic flooring over screeding work of 20-mm thickness with a mix ratio of 1:2:4 following DUDBC norms. 5 mm layers of white cement and 3 mm marble chips with a mix ratio of 1:1 are placed over the concrete floor. The tearrazzo mosaic floor should be cured for a week to prevent cracks, then ground using carborandum, polished with turpentine and polishing paste, and the surface cleaned with oxylic acid for a smooth finish. For rate analysis, we follow norms specified in

  • Kathmandu district rate 080/81
  • DUDBC norms
You can find these norms in our download sections.

Calculations

The calculation steps follow a similar process as in our other rate analysis.

  • Estimation of materials and cost
  • Workers required and cost
  • The cost of using tools and plants for 3% of unskilled workers
  • Contractor overhead is at 15%.

Let us consider a floor area of 10 square meters.

Volume: 10 * 5/1000 = 0.05 cu.m.

Adding 54% to calculate dry volume

Dry Volume: 1.54 * 0.05 = 0.077 cum

To compensate for the loss during rubbing and polishing for a smooth surface, add 20%.

Total dry volume: 1.20 * 0.077 = 0.092 cu.m.

As the mix ratio of white cement to 3mm marble clips is 1:1, half of the total dry volume is cement.

Volume of cement = 0.092/2 = 0.046 cu.m.

Mass = density * volume

          = 1440 * 0.046

Mass = 66.53 kg

For 40 kg bags of white cement

Number of bags of cement: 66.53/40 = 1.66 bags.

Volume of marble chips = ratio of marble chips * total dry volume / (sum of ratios)

                                        = 1 * 0.092 / (2)

Volume of marble chips = 0.046 cu.m.

Density of marble chips: 1650 kg/m3

Mass = density * volume

         = 1650 * 0.046

Mass = 75.9 kg

For 25 kg bags of 3mm marble chips

Number of bags of marble chips = 75.9/25 = 3.04 bags

From our earlier blog, the quantity of cement, sand, and aggregate for 20-mm-thick concrete flooring with a mix ratio of 1:2:4

Cement: 1.27 bags

Sand: 0.088 cu.m.

10mm Aggregate: 0.176 cu.m.

Cost of materials as per district rate in Kathmandu: 080/81

Cement: 1.27 bags at 700 = Rs. 889

Sand: 0.088 cu.m. at 3319.61 = Rs. 292.13

Aggregate: 0.176 cu.m. at 3390.21 = Rs 956.68

White cement: 1.66 bags at 1230 = Rs. 2041.80

As the rate of marble chips is not specified in the KTM district rate, we are taking the rate from Bhaktapur district 080/81; both districts have similar rates.

Marble chips: 3.04 bags at 178 = Rs. 541.12

Rubbing and polishing items as specified in DUDBC code

Oxylic acid: 0.365 kg at 125 = Rs. 45.62

Polishing paste (main palish): 0.118 kg at 367 = Rs. 43.31

Turpentine: 0.538 ltr at 221 = Rs. 118.89

Carborandum: 750approx.

Total cost of materials: 889 + 292.13 + 956.68 + 2041.80 + 541.12 + 45.62 + 43.31 + 118.89 + 750

Total cost of materials: Rs. 5678.55

Workers required from DUDBC codes and rates from KTM district rate 080/81

Skilled workers: 2.5 at 1200 = Rs. 3000.00

Unskilled workers: 16 at 900 = Rs. 14400.00

Total worker cost per 10 sq. m. floor: 3000 + 14400 = Rs. 17400

The cost of hiring tools and plants at 3% of unskilled workers

Tools and plants: 3% of 14400 = Rs. 432.00

Total cost: cost of materials + workers + tools and plant

                = 5678.55 + 17400 + 432.00

Total cost: Rs. 23510.55

Adding 15% of the of the contractor's overhead and profit

Contractor overhead: 15% of 23510.55 = Rs. 3526.58

Total cost per 10 square meters of terrazzo mosaic flooring: 23510.55 + 3526.58 = Rs. 27037.13

Cost per square meter of terrazzo mosaic flooring: 27037.13/10 = Rs. 2703.71

Others:

The color and design of terrazzo flooring can be modified depending on the design and choice. The following variations are common in practice:

  • If you choose to make square borders of 600mm*600mm using 5mm thick glass with a strip a strip height of 25mm, the rate per square meter of terrazzo flooring will increase by forty-nine rupees.

  • If you want to add coloring pigments to the floor, you can add 1 kg of coloring pigment per bag of white cement. The per-kg cost of coloring pigment in the Nepali market is approximately two hundred rupees.

  • In the above composition of white cement and marble chips, you can also add marble power. The tentative ratio of marble powder will be 30% of white cement.

  • The ratio of white cement to marble chips can be 1:1 to 1:2, and you can also add other natural quatz and silica stones for a better appearance.
